About the scheme
Cool Kerala promotes brushless direct current (BLDC) fans in homes across the state to reduce electricity use and improve energy efficiency. It is part of the Government of Kerala’s 100-day action programme and is implemented statewide by Energy Management Centre – Kerala under the Department of Power.
Why choose a BEE 5-star BLDC fan?
A ceiling fan is one of the appliances that runs longest in a home. Even a small difference in a fan’s power use shows up on the electricity bill when it runs every day.
What are BLDC and BEE 5-star?
What is BLDC technology?
Brushless direct current (BLDC) fans use permanent magnets and electronic control, which cuts electricity losses. A suitable model delivers the air you need using less electricity than an ordinary ceiling fan.
What does BEE 5-star mean?
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Union Ministry of Power, gives appliances a star label to show how energy-efficient they are. For fans the rating is based on criteria including air delivery and power use. More stars means more efficient. Don’t rely on the label alone — also check the model’s wattage, air delivery and warranty.
How much can one fan save? An example
An old 75 W fan and a new 30 W fan, each running 14 hours a day for 365 days, at ₹6 per unit: 45 W less power, about 230 units saved a year, about ₹1,380 saved a year. Calculation: 45 W × 14 hours × 365 days ÷ 1,000 ≈ 230 units a year. Actual savings vary with the wattage of the old and new fans, hours of use and your tariff.
Objectives
- Promote energy-efficient BEE 5-star BLDC fans among household consumers.
- Increase the use of low-consumption fans in place of conventional fans.
- Help reduce peak demand by lowering household electricity use.
- Make BEE 5-star fans available statewide until the scheme end date.
How the scheme works
The scheme runs through the existing market. EMC empanels eligible manufacturers of BEE 5-star BLDC fans. Each empanelled manufacturer submits eligible models and proposes a scheme price for each one.
Scheme price
The proposed scheme price must be lower than the model’s normal market price. The approved scheme price is the maximum that can be charged for that fan under the scheme.
- Energy-efficient fans: BEE 5-star BLDC fan models only.
- Empanelled manufacturers: qualified manufacturers who meet the scheme conditions.
- Digital coupon: issued after online registration.
- Statewide availability: authorised outlets in every district of Kerala.
- Exchange offers: some manufacturers offer old-fan exchange, arranged with the dealer.
- After-sales service: through the manufacturer’s and dealer’s existing service network.
Digital coupon
Household consumers register on this portal to get a digital coupon for buying a fan. One coupon is used for each purchase. Each sale records the coupon number, the buyer’s mobile number, the fan model and the dealer, so progress can be tracked and every transaction stays transparent.
